Tracking at Terra 705 underestimates the depth. I found my device! Learn more about setting up the device

    Acquaintance or the first damn lumpy

    My first acquaintance with this device took place long before I became its full owner.
    And this happened several years ago immediately after this new product entered the market, replacing its predecessor Minelab T-74. One person I knew, knowing about my passion for being a cop, asked me to help him choose a metal detector. He had money, so it was decided to immediately take the 705, skipping over the simpler models. We bought it and immediately went to test it in one good place, replete with Soviet coins.

    After turning 34, it was not easy to adapt to the new device. I was confused by the unusual polyphonic sound and the constant threshold background; there was no time to figure out how to turn it off. After wandering around for a couple of hours, I didn’t really understand it and didn’t master it. We did find a few coins, but this was only due to the fact that we dug everywhere.

    In general, the first impression was twofold: on the one hand, even in such a short period of ownership, I felt that it hit the target deeply, and on the other hand, I was very confused by the discordant polyphony.

    Why him

    Time passed, trips for coins continued regularly. With my faithful friend the T-34 grater, quite a few finds were recovered. But after two years of engaging in this hobby, the understanding came that this entry-level model had already become too simple, the lack of target detection depth and the unimportant search ability of the mono coil were increasingly felt.

    With the money raised from the sale of coins and raised non-ferrous metal, it was decided to buy a brand new 505 (705 turned out to be a bit expensive). Why was the Minelab model line considered? Yes, everything is very simple - at that time there wasn’t much to choose from, there was only Garrett. But already at the first purchase I somehow liked it better; later, having gotten used to this company, I no longer had the desire to change it for anything else.

    Over the years of owning three devices from this company, there were no questions about the reliability and their capabilities (maybe because they were not yet manufactured in Malaysia at that time?) Well, I would also like to add, so that this is not perceived as advertising, I am writing as it is, without belittling advantages of other similar devices. As they say “taste and color...”

    The 505 only lasted one season, at the end of which it was decided not to stop there and change it to the 705.

    About the ownership experience

    And now, in the spring of the new digging season, I learned all the features of this metal detector. It initially took a week to master it, but after two weeks you could already say that you had gotten used to it. After 505, it was generally not difficult, at least much easier than after switching from 34 to 505.

    From the first days I felt that this was a worthy device. In reality, its detection depth is large; it was not difficult to establish this without even going into technical details - coins were often picked up from a good depth. I will not indicate any specific numbers, because... I didn’t measure it with a ruler, and all these indicators are very arbitrary and depend on a bunch of factors. Well, let me just boast about one incident: I once dug a whole fold (6x6cm) with 2.5-3 bayonets.
    I also noted for myself that the X Terra 705 sees the target a little deeper than five hundred and five.

    In addition to the good detection depth, I liked the automatic adjustment to the ground (it is clear that it is better to use manual, but this is also needed).

    In addition, catching small coins turned out to be a pleasant moment. It would seem that both the 505 and the 705 each have three target detection frequencies, but for some reason, during the time I owned the first device, there were practically no small finds. But the 705 perfectly sees both Soviet and Tsarist kopecks, for example, and 1/4 kopecks, and so on. True, the scales do not catch as well as, for example, the e-track.

    On the scale of discrimination, I won’t say anything bad, but I won’t say anything good either. I didn’t feel any noticeable difference in connection with its more detailed division (28 segments). The main reference point is still a clean signal. Various extraneous echoes are not a reason not to dig for such a signal. Who knows where the find lies and what else is there next to it. Therefore, I believe that only professionals can detect subtle changes in polyphony and, based on this, ignore the signal. And I don’t consider myself one of those.

    The new geo-mode option, which caused a lot of noise, was, frankly speaking, practically not used. I didn’t feel any tangible impact from it.

    The same can be said about the tonal background. Experienced diggers unanimously say that if it is present on the device, then it must be used. But no matter how hard I tried to get used to it, it didn’t work out. If I walk around with it, the number of finds immediately decreases; due to the intrusive sound, I can’t concentrate normally on the search. In general, I don't use it often.

    About standard coils

    When purchasing, I had the choice to take a device with a 10.5″ 7.5 kHz or 18.5 kHz DD coil. I took the usual standard one - 7.5 kHz. Knowing in advance about the possibility of choice, I prepared thoroughly - I searched through all the treasure hunting forums on this topic. As a result, I came to the conclusion that by giving preference to one variety or another, one would have to sacrifice something in any case. This is where you need to decide what is more important for you - excellent visibility of even a small target at a shallower depth (18.75) or vice versa - slightly worse object detection at a greater depth (7.5).
    I decided for myself - the second one, because... In our area, scales are rare.

    In general, good brains, a bunch of useful modes and an adequate price are just what you need. For now I decided to stick with this device. The overpayment for a 28 frequency unit is too high.

    Good luck to everyone in the fields!

    Still, he is good - watch the video.

    X-Terra 705 is the senior model in the line of budget-level metal detectors from Minelab from Australia. This device for finding coins is well known to search engines, as it has been produced for a long time and with virtually no changes in design. It has firmly secured the title of the best metal detector for both beginners and experienced searchers.

    Characteristics

    The X-Terra 705 metal detector has three operating frequencies: low (3 kHz), medium (7.5 kHz) and high (18.75 kHz). The frequency changes when installing the corresponding coil. Most often, when searching, the average frequency of 7.5 kHz is used - it is with this coil that the device is most often sold. It is used to detect all types of targets. The low frequency of 3 kHz is designed for searching for large targets at great depths or for searching for coins with good conductivity. Most often it is used to search for military artifacts. The high frequency of 18.75 kHz is used to locate jewelry, low conductivity coins, and gold nuggets.

    The device is available in several configurations, which differ only in the coils. In Russia, the X-Terra 705 with a 10.5" DoubleD 7.5 kHz coil is most often sold. Minelab recommends using it on highly mineralized soils and for searching for gold nuggets. The coil is splash-proof, but if left in water for a long time, it can leak and come out out of service.

    X-Terra 705 runs on four AA batteries. Working time is about four days. But it is recommended to change batteries more often, since as the batteries discharge, the search depth also decreases.

    Testing

    The device has a minimal number of settings, but is nevertheless quite effective in operation. The search depth is average (37 cm in air for a coin of 5 kopecks of Catherine). The device separates targets well in a littered field - it can successfully detect non-ferrous metal next to black metal.

    The X-Terra 705 metal detector has a convenient design and low weight. The device is well balanced, easy to hold and long-term use does not cause fatigue. Of particular note is the large display; there is no need to strain your eyes to see the device readings

    Reference article based on the expert opinion of the author.

    The Minelab X-Terra 705 metal detector carries on board all the necessary functions for searching in any terrain and at any level of experience in the field of treasure hunting. The manufacturer has combined in one device the advantages of previous models of the Minelab X-Terra line (305 and 505), which have long been loved by many search engines in different countries of the world.

    Main advantages:

    Fast microprocessor

    4 search programs

    Multi-segment discrimination scale

    Accurate digital target identifier

    Detunement from power lines and other electromagnetic interference

    Ground balancing

    Geo-search mode

    User-friendly interface

    Ergonomics

    Now let's take a closer look

    why you should buy a Minelab X-Terra 705 metal detector

    Illuminated control unit

    The wide monitor is the first thing that catches your eye on the control unit. All information is displayed on the screen in bold and large font. Anti-glare coating and an excellent viewing angle allow you to work on bright and sunny days, and the display backlight will add confidence in the dark. Many search engines like to rely on hearing, but it is much more reliable to combine sound and digital!

    The large touch buttons are comfortable to operate even with gloves. For quick memorization, all keys are marked with intuitive icons. All manipulations are quite convenient to perform with the thumb of your working hand, without being too distracted from the search process.

    Manual and automatic ground balancing

    The first thing every treasure hunter does when arriving at an area is to build up from the ground, otherwise the search efficiency will be much lower. You can carry out soil balancing in the Minelab X-Terra 705 model in manual and automatic modes.

    Automation is indispensable where the search is carried out in “difficult” conditions (mineralized soil, salts, etc.). Ironically, it is minerals, “hot stones” and other decoys that are the companions of native gold. Automatic soil tuning will prevent the device from responding to anything other than truly valuable and ancient artifacts.

    No electrical interference

    The Minelab X-Terra 705 metal detector can be considered one of the quietest devices. No “muttering” from various electrical noise! The search can be carried out both under power lines and next to other metal detectors. Kudos to the manufacturer for adding excellent modern VFLEX technology to the fast processor, which “muffles” extraneous sounds, making the search process better.

    Fast wiring, precise target identification and no extraneous sounds or interference - isn’t this the dream of every treasure hunter? In addition, it is this function that allows you to enhance the performance of the device by providing it with an additional coil with a different, higher operating frequency.

    28 discrimination elements in Minelab X-Terra 705!

    Although the vast majority of treasure hunters love to work with the “All Metals” mode, it is impossible not to note discrimination in the Minelab X-Terra 705 detector. The discrimination scale is represented by 28 segments. 4 segments belong to ferrous metal, the remaining -24 go to non-ferrous metal. It’s quite easy to decide whether to dig or not to dig.

    However, do not forget that working with a discriminator also requires certain skills and experience. Missing good targets is the norm for a new search engine. The key to a quality search is high sensitivity and searching with the discriminator turned off, but this comes with time.

    PinPoint Mode

    The built-in PinPoint program, marked on the block as a target, is responsible for clear localization of the target. When a find is discovered, this function will help you accurately determine its location, so as not to waste time and not damage a valuable artifact with a shovel.

    Geo-mode - collect everything to the last grain!

    Unraveling scales, small grains of gold, jewelry, small ancient relics and ancient coins - there will be nothing left in Geo-mode after Minelab X-Terra 705! Many people believe that this mode is only suitable for searching for native gold. But in vain!

    Pre-Petrovsky sites and beaches are cleaned in this mode. The difficulty lies in mastering this function - it is too difficult to listen to the device. The display in Geo mode is useless - only hearing and slow wiring.

    Polyphony or monotony? The choice is yours!

    Whether to look at the monitor or listen to the sound - each search engine decides for itself. In the Minelab X-Terra 705 metal detector, you can customize the sound tone to suit you and your preferences.

    Is it common to work in one tone? Please: one tone, two, three, four. Do you prefer a variety of sounds to hear all the nuances? Here's polyphony for you! The volume is also adjustable. There is a headphone jack, which is indispensable in windy weather.

    Buy 1 get 3!

    The main advantage of VFLEX technology is that the signal is generated not in the control unit, but in the coil! This means that when you change the coil, the capabilities of the device also change! The Minelab X-Terra 705 metal detector, thanks to a variety of coils, is capable of operating at 3 different frequencies:

    3 kHz for maximum depth search

    7.5 kHz universal frequency for most search locations

    18.75 kHz only small targets for area clearing

    Ellipse or circle, mono or DD - a variety of coils of different sizes are suitable for the device, so that the search engine has a variable metal detector for different types of searches and for different areas.

    Economy and ergonomics of X-Terra 705

    The detector is powered by 4 AA batteries or rechargeable batteries. The Minelab X-Terra 705 metal detector is equipped with an internal power regulation circuit, which does not reduce the detection depth when the battery gradually discharges. High-quality operation of the metal detector is guaranteed until the batteries are completely discharged.

    The device has a familiar and convenient S-shaped design. The bar is adjustable to suit any height and is securely fixed in the chosen position. The arm fits perfectly in the armrest socket and is secured with a Velcro strap.

    Conclusion: if you buy a Minelab X-Terra 705 metal detector, the treasure hunter is unlikely to think about changing the device in the future. Advanced functionality, the possibility of individual settings, excellent discrimination and universal search modes - what more could you want from a metal detector? It doesn’t matter at all what is “found” in the ground: ancient coins, ancient relics, gold nuggets or modern “lost treasures” - with the Minelab X-Terra 705 model, every target will be found!

    The popular Australian metal detector X Terra 705, known in Russia as “Tyorka”, belongs to the class of professional equipment for searching almost any metal objects. It is often used to search for coins and treasures, but the device is capable of detecting metal ores and individual nuggets. Moreover, the model operates at three different frequencies and quite effectively separates search objects from the ground, regardless of their size and the saturation of the soil with metal particles.

    Operating principle

    The operating principle of the Minelab X Terra 705 device is based on the selective division of all possible search options into 28 segments, each of which can be included in its own program. The metal detector supports working with 6 such sets simultaneously. If there is an object under the detector coil for which the device is currently configured, the corresponding segment on the display is highlighted and at the same time a sound signal is issued.

    After responding to the target, information about the type of find and the distance to the object appears on the Terra 705 screen. And the rest of the time, here you can learn about the equipment settings and the charge of its batteries. It is worth noting that the battery capacity of the device is enough for 15-20 hours of operation, or 2-3 search “shifts”.

    Metal detector equipment

    The X Terra 705 comes with the following parts:

    • device control unit;
    • three elements of a composite rod;
    • universal dual-band DD 10.5-inch coil with an operating frequency of 7.5 kHz (sometimes replaced by a single-band nine-inch modification);
    • protection of the corresponding coil for X Terra 705 (9"" or 10.5"");
    • collapsible armrest, consisting of 2 parts (upper and lower);
    • bolts and washers with which the control unit, coil and armrest are secured;
    • Velcro fasteners;
    • instructions for the device and warranty card.

    DD coil capabilities

    The DoubleD 10.5" (26 cm) coil, which is supplied with the X Terra 705 metal detector by default, is designed for effective operation on soils with a high degree of mineralization. Thanks to the special DoubleD technology (two frequency ranges) and the optimal dimensions of this part, the territory can be surveyed much more faster than with other equipment.

    The high sensitivity of the coil allows it to find even the smallest objects. At the same time, it is completely sealed and can even be submerged under water - although the manufacturer does not recommend doing this often or for a long time. And the low weight (only 0.38 kg) practically does not weigh down the device itself, ensuring operation with it for several hours in a row.

    Advantages of the device

    Among the advantages that distinguish the X Terra 705 from other models, it is worth noting the main ones:

    • The presence of a ground tracking mode, complementing the already existing three settings options (manual, automatic and “beach”).
    • Added function for determining the approximate dimensions of the found object.
    • Screen backlighting, allowing you to work with the device in any conditions - both in the dark and in bright sunshine.
    • Adjusting the signal volume is a function that is especially important when working without headphones.
    • Multi-tone, allowing you to use either 4 tones for searching (for the main types of objects), or all 28 at once (according to the number of segments).
    • Possibility of using several search methods. For a nine-inch coil, the crossover technique is most convenient. For the universal DoubleD model, the amount of overlapping stroke is minimal, and you have to move it much less often.

    • the presence of a geological exploration mode, for which you will have to connect a special coil with a frequency of 18.75 kHz to the device.

    Features of work

    An important factor influencing the effectiveness of detecting metal objects is the interference present in the soil - metal debris, minerals, clay soils and even bricks. An inexpensive, high-quality metal detector such as the X Terra 705 can be adjusted manually or automatically to isolate such interference and increase the likelihood of finding a truly valuable item.

    It is recommended for inexperienced users who have just started working with this model to enable automatic adjustment of the device. Professionals can avoid missing the target by using their experience. This manual balancing sometimes allows for more effective results, although it is time-consuming.

    When working with the device, it is advisable to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations:

    • Use the Minelab X Terra 705 metal detector while wearing headphones, which allows you to better focus on the tone. If this search method is not possible for some reason, you should adjust the signal volume to a value convenient for the user.

    • In order to isolate yourself from third-party electromagnetic interference (other metal detectors or high-voltage wires), you should enable the Noise Cancel function, available for both manual and automatic modes.
    • The equipment response threshold tone setting (ranging from -5 to +25) should be set to the limit of human audibility. You should not make the signal too loud because of false responses. And choosing quiet settings may result in missing detected small objects. To search on the beach, the parameter is set to negative.

    Comparison with analogue metal detectors

    When comparing Terra 705 with devices of similar functionality and efficiency, the following features of this device can be noted:

    • Lightweight, thanks to which it can be carried with one hand for a long time. The metal detector is more than 100 g lighter than the Garrett AT PRO and Tesoro Tejon models, and 200 g lighter than the Bounty Hunter Time Ranger.
    • DoubleD technology allows you to perform fewer strokes during the search, as a result of which energy consumption per unit of time is reduced, and the metal detector can cover a greater distance.
    • Terra 705 is assembled faster than its analogues and has a removable control unit, which increases the convenience of transporting the device.
    • Unlike most other models, the screen is not overloaded with unnecessary data. All information can be viewed with a few extra clicks. This characteristic can be called either a plus or a minus, depending on the user’s requirements.

    It is also worth paying attention to the fact that the Tesoro Tejon metal detector allows you to get no less effective results. However, the model requires a lot of experience in order to adapt to the presence of only one tone and the absence of a display. After all, instead of a screen, Tesoro has several toggle switches, characteristic of devices of previous generations. However, many treasure hunters with extensive experience are attracted by this very familiar feature.

    At the same time, learning to work with Garrett AT PRO is the easiest compared to other devices in the review. And the Bounty Hunter and Minelab models are approximately in the middle in terms of the level of user adaptability to them.

    At the same time, user reviews left on the X Terra 705 report a small disadvantage that is absent in a number of similar devices. When finding an object, many treasure hunters try to turn off the device in order to save battery power. But while the Garrett, Tesoro and Bounty Hunter models can be easily turned off in such a situation, the X Terra will have to be rested on the ground or use the second hand (which usually carries other equipment).

    The main difference between the X-Terra 705 metal detector, which directly affects detection depth and sensitivity:

    • system for detuning from soil mineralization. The ability to track soil has been added to the T74's existing settings: Manual, Auto and Beach. Tracking mode can be useful in highly mineralized soils with hot rocks. or on the beach. When searching on the beach on dry sand, one setting per ground is required, and on wet sand;
    • another, you can easily adjust the setting at the touch of a button. - a function for determining the size of a target has been added to the PinPoint mode for accurately determining the center of a target;
    • the number of saved discrimination masks has been increased to 4 + IronMask;
    • display backlighting appeared. The menu and control keys of the X-Terra 705 metal detector are made in the form of quickly memorable and understandable icons. Even a beginner can understand the controls of the new metal detector.

    The brains of a metal detector:

    The X-Terra 705 metal detector, as well as the entire series of X-Terra metal detectors, are made using modern VFLEX digital technology, which allows you to get rid of the interference that was inevitably present in older analog models. Metal detectors are controlled by a modern microprocessor. This allowed X-Terra to significantly improve the quality of discrimination (recognition of metal type), increase depth, sensitivity, and reduce the influence of interference from soil mineralization and electrical interference compared to analog models

    Control keys: The menu and control keys of the X-Terra 505 metal detector are designed in the form of pictograms. They are easy to remember and will be understandable even to a beginner who picks up a metal detector for the first time. The instructions are completely in Russian.

    Ground setting: An important factor influencing the detection depth of a metal detector.
    Since you and I are searching for treasures, coins, etc. not in the air, but in the ground, which inevitably contains various interferences that prevent the electromagnetic signal of the metal detector from penetrating into the soil. These are the remains of various metal debris, minerals with different electrical conductivity, which include clayey soils, salty soils, ordinary red bricks, ceramics and various burnt shards and much more; such interference has a general name - soil mineralization. Mineralization is one of the most important factors influencing the detection depth of a metal detector. The better a metal detector can ignore soil noise, the higher its detection depth, sensitivity and ability to distinguish metals. The X-Terra 705 metal detector model has a manual, automatic and ground tracking system, allowing you to tune the metal detector from soil interference and search where other metal detectors cannot. Automatic adjustment to the ground is indispensable when searching not only for native gold, where mineralized rocks are an integral companion of gold, but also in clayey and saline soils.

    Automatic adjustment to the soil allows the metal detector to always maintain the maximum detection depth, regardless of the composition of the soil.

    The first picture shows a search without automatic adjustment to the soil. Ground noise reduces the effective search depth of a metal detector. The shaded area shows an area of land that has not been properly surveyed.

    The second picture shows how an experienced professional will avoid missing the target. But this requires frequent manual balancing of the metal detector, which is time-consuming.

    The third picture shows the system of automatic adjustment to the soil. The metal detector maintains sensitivity and depth throughout the entire search area without missing targets. The metal detector independently adjusts to the amount of soil interference, always maintaining the maximum detection depth.

    The advantage of multi-frequency metal detectors with good ground balancing was noticed at the mines in Bodaibo, Irkutsk region.

    “In our practice, there were many cases when we encountered strong mineralization, but one of the areas was particularly memorable. It was in the Bodaibinsky district on the B. Chanchik and Ugakhan rivers. The mineralization of the soil was so strong that conventional single-frequency metal detectors with manual soil tuning responded to almost every stone (hot stones) as a good target. With all our efforts, we were not able to completely detune single-frequency metal detectors from “hot stones,” while the detection depth dropped so much that it did not exceed 5 cm. Multi-frequency metal detectors with auto-tuning to the ground, although they reduced sensitivity by about one third, continued work steadily on this mineralized soil without reacting to "hot stones". In this area, our production amounted to more than 500 grams of gold nuggets. Rudolf Kavchik."

    Electrical Noise Cancellation: Another important factor influencing the detection depth is electrical interference. The X-Terra 705 metal detector model has the ability to tune out such interference. There are many examples when tuning out electrical noise is simply necessary: for example, when you have to work close to other metal detectors, for example, in an attic, in a basement, at a treasure hunter's meeting or near a power line.

    Equipment and coils for X-Terra 705: The X-Terra 705 metal detector model is equipped with a universal 10.5" DoubleD 7.5 kHz coil, suitable for most search conditions, or a 9" MONO 7.5 kHz coil. But a universal coil does not always fully reveal the capabilities of the metal detector; sometimes you want to look deeper, or examine the search area with special care; for these purposes, coils of other sizes and configurations are used. In the box:

    • Metal detector control unit,
    • Coil 10.5” DD 7.5 kHz. or 9” MONO 7.5 kHz
